How to Shower for Better Skin: 9 Habits Worth Stealing from Dermatologists
Share
You probably shower every day, baka nga twice. That's hundreds of showers a year, which makes the shower one of the easiest places to do something good for your skin without adding a single extra step to your day.
Tabo loyalist or rain-shower person, these nine habits work the same way.
The short version
- Warm water, not hot, and keep it to about 5–10 minutes.
- Use a gentle cleanser and your hands or a soft cloth.
- Wash your hair first and your body last. Shave at the end.
- Pat dry, then moisturize within minutes.
- Keep your loofah and towel clean and dry.
1. Turn the water down a notch
A hot shower feels amazing after a long day, but hot water strips your skin's natural oils faster. The American Academy of Dermatology recommends warm water instead. In our climate, lukewarm to cool is refreshing anyway.
2. Keep it to 5–10 minutes
The AAD suggests limiting baths and showers to five to ten minutes. Long, steamy showers are a classic cause of dry, tight skin, so save the shower concert for a shorter playlist.
3. Pick a gentle, soap-free wash
If you shower once or twice a day, your cleanser matters more than you'd think. Harsh soaps and strong sulfate cleansers can leave skin tight and dry over time. A gentle, soap-free wash cleans without stripping. (Here's how to read a body wash label.)
Wash your whole body, and be extra thorough on the sweat zones: kili-kili, singit, feet, and your back after a sweaty day.
4. Use your hands, or a soft cloth
For most days, your fingertips are enough. If you love a loofah, keep it clean. Cleveland Clinic warns that loofahs can harbor bacteria and fungi. It recommends replacing natural loofahs every three to four weeks (plastic ones last about two months), hanging them to dry somewhere other than the shower, and skipping them for a couple of days after you shave.
And the panghilod? Save it for rough heels. Everywhere else, dahan-dahan lang. Aggressive scrubbing irritates skin more than it smooths it. (If you're fighting chicken skin, here's what works better than scrubbing.)
5. Give your wash a moment
Don't rush the rinse. Massage your body wash over your skin for 30 to 60 seconds so it has time to lift away sweat, sunscreen and oil, and so any skin-loving ingredients in the formula get a little more contact time before they go down the drain.
6. Hair first, body last
Shampoo and condition first, then wash your body. That way, conditioner and hair products get rinsed off your back and chest instead of sitting on them. It's a simple habit that can help if you're prone to body breakouts. (More on that in our bacne guide.)
7. Shave at the end
The AAD recommends shaving at the end of your shower, once warm water has softened your skin and hair. Use a shaving cream or gel, shave in the direction your hair grows, and rinse the blade after each swipe.
8. Pat, don't rub
Rough towel-drying is friction your skin doesn't need. Gently pat yourself dry and leave your skin slightly damp.
9. Moisturize within minutes
This is the habit that ties everything together. Apply your body lotion or cream while your skin is still a little damp to lock in the water it just soaked up. For rough, bumpy skin, the AAD recommends doing it within 5 minutes of bathing. Yes, even in humid weather, and especially if you're headed into a full day of aircon.
Bonus: keep your towel happy
A towel that stays damp (hello, tag-ulan) gets musty fast. Hang it to dry completely after every use, and wash it often, especially when the weather's wet.
A simple routine you can steal
Morning, 5 minutes: lukewarm water, gentle body wash, rinse, pat dry, light lotion, then sunscreen on any skin that will see the sun.
Night, 10 minutes: hair first, then a gentle wash with a 30–60 second massage, rinse, shave if needed, pat dry, and a richer moisturizer, especially on elbows, knees and shins.
After the gym or a sweaty commute: a quick rinse and a fresh change of clothes. Your back will thank you.
Whatever your weather, these habits work. For more on heat, rainy season and aircon, read our Philippine weather body care guide.
